The (Maneki Neko) Cat is out of the Bag

A press release went out and the Radio Times reported it today so we can finally say:

There's a new zone

Thank Thor for that, I hate keeping secrets. Anyway, I was midway through typing up another Sketch/Parody post when it came to my attention that the Radio Times website had let loose the news we discovered in March that Medieval is no more and the castle has been replaced with an Eastern palace.

New rooms with new doors with fancy hatches for teams to offer help through. When we visited construction was still underway, but what we did see looked amazing and we hope it comes across as good on screen. There's more to be revealed but we'll keep schtum as it's far better if you learn the surprises as they're shown. Set designer James Dillon (great bloke, remembered us from our visit last year) said, “The challenge, to create a zone referencing such an ancient and beautiful part of the world, and to bring those intense, rich colours and textures to the mix of zones that make up the Maze, has been most enjoyable". He's also the designer for Taskmaster and the keen-eyed among you may have noticed a similar theme in the new series on Dave. Starting to wonder if he did his work for this year after a particularly good takeaway.

Should more details come out we'll have them here, but it's not for us to reveal details, not yet anyway...

The Crystal Maze returns to Channel 4 for 13 episodes later this year (we're guessing 12 and a Christmas special) but if you need your fix now, the revival series is available on All4

If you didn't know what a Maneki Neko cat is
Thoughts on the new zone: Are you glad to see some change? Would you rather have seen another zone other than Medieval go? Are you just looking forward to a new series?

Quick thought: the board game is going to need updating

UPDATE: Rascals agreed

  1. Hopefully transitions have been considered plus it also means a new map so hopefully design suggestions have been taken into account

    1. transitions: dont expect a huge change, there is something there that's new and it looks great, it's not a drastic overhaul though. And yes, the map does need an update, whether the design style changes is something we just dont know

  2. A new map is needed but don't think it will happen.

    2. We had involvement with the show and even we don't know when it will be aired, according to C4 they plan their schedules two weeks ahead. June sounds about right. Looking forward to it. As we will be allowed our photos from our time on set again. We've got one hell of a blog article to write about when we are allowed to post about it. But we are still under NDA.
