I've got the Crystal!

Well I went a bit mad on eBay today and bidded £440 for an actual Crystal Maze Crew Jacket and Crystal (boxed) from the Original Series.

I almost got outbidded at the last second, but my adrenaline kicked in at the last second in true maze style and I won the auction. Anita Stubbs, Production Secretary of the Original Series was selling it.

I'm getting it sent to a friend of mine in the UK, soon as I finish this deployment I look forward to coming home to my Crystal! What a childhood dream to own one of these.

What a dream come true at last! I have the Live experience Crystal, crowd funding Crystal, Crystal from the New Series, and now an actual one from the Original programme! I will take a photograph of them all together once I am back in the UK!

Collectively, this Fan Forum own quite a substantial collection of Maze Memorabelia. We could hold a convention at this rate!

02/02/18: Phil back in the UK has teased me with this Royal Mail Card, he is off to collect the original Crystal on my behalf tomorrow, then send it to me when I am back in the UK from this deployment. Exciting times.

Another step closer to holding and owning an original Crystal from The Crystal Maze!

Our Team entry for the new Series of The Crystal Maze

Wish us luck!

Reviving a relic from the old 90's Crystal Maze set

In 2017 I was stunned to come across an actual digital game clock from the Futuristic Zone of the old Crystal Maze set for sale on an auction website, from a prop company. I bought it for a few hundred pounds. It didn't work, but I was able to get it to work after a big struggle. It's genuine, the Circuitboard is still date stamped 1992, and there is also a label on the back of it, 1992 - so it's from the era of Richard O'Brien and Edward Tudor-Pole! It was wonderful to bring it back to life again, a maze fan friend of mine called Jonathan helped me restore it. It was very fiddly, the connections were loose and the soldering had become a bit brittle. But we are preserving, collecting and storing props and relics from the maze here at the Fan Group from one of the UK's all time favourite TV shows.

The man behind the revived Crystal Maze

Neale Simpson, Executive Producer of the new series of The Crystal Maze, has invested a lot of thought and knowledge into making the revival series such a success. It has now been issued a commission for a further 12 episodes, 6 of which will be Celebrity. Many Congratulations to him. He has been very kind to interact regularly with our fan group via email and letters. We thank you massively for engaging with us so enthusiastically. He has gone into a lot of detail for us. We appreciate everything you have done so far for this show.

The awesome new Crystal Dome
The process of bringing back The Crystal Maze for good, was a long drawn out process that has taken a fair few years, assuming this could be in terms of purchasing the rights to the format, and ensuring that the revival would live up to high expectations. With the UK public sharing continued fond memories of the show, Channel 4 would of exercised caution in ensuring that the revival wouldn't fail, like Gladiators for example. I am relieved to say that this has not happened and it has been a roaring success. What was exciting for me is that they invited some of the key original brains back to create the new series. For example, James Dillion, who designed the original set to recreate and re-envisage the maze for a modern audience.

The new Futuristic Zone

The new series has reinvented a Zone. We are now greeted with a brand new clinically white, modern looking Futuristic Zone with Space Age style corridors (above). However, the modern future has also seen commercial constraints. Unfortunately now we don't see as many games in each zone unfortunately. We also don't see zones running to order as per the map, which at first bewildered fans. Normally contestants would traverse the maze in either a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction through connected zones, rather than diagonally and in random orders. But there are strong valid reasons for this.

"An important consideration is now to ensure the maze is accessible for people with a disability, which previous series weren't required to do so." - Neale Simpson, Executive Producer of The Crystal Maze.

Host Richard Ayoade

Neale told us: "We had to contend with a different commercial hour structure to the original, most notably three ad breaks as opposed to two. In the original, zone transitions would sometimes take place in the middle of a part, thereby justifying making more of a feature of them; they had the time and the structure to revel in these moments in a way we simply can'tWe realised that to maximise the content and make the most of the four zones the best place to put the transitions were at the end and start of each part. If you are seeing people exit a zone at the end of a part you don't want to see them arrive in the new one and then go to the ads; as soon as they arrive in a new zone you want to get cracking so we knew it made most sense to split the transitions over the break."

Zone Transitions
Discussing Zone transitions, Neale explained: "We have a Zone entrance for each time a Zone opens the show, and we have three ways in and out of Industrial and Aztec, two in Medieval and two in Futuristic. This means we can change how we come in and out each time and it doesn't matter which option we take because it isn't constrained by the idea that they must all then arrive in a specific zone next

Neale added: "The result isn't just more variety of transitions, it also means we are able to deliver more variety in zones and games. We were able to mix up running orders of shows and games in a way that meant we could ensure that there was minimal repetition across episodes, and shows that featured the most games alike would play out in completely different orders."

New Aztec Zone
In summary. As a fan, I believe that this is only a minor point, the quality of the new series is superb and the games ring true to the old spirit and charm of The Crystal Maze. We've got the maze back, we have a new legion of fans (or millennials!), that are being captivated by the thrills and spills of the show. We have living characters in the maze, such as "Jarhead", and the Knight. The infamous Aztec Water log is back, along with high tech games and an LED Crystal Dome. Plus the maze is now in High Definition. What more could we possibly want? I even read that they dug out candle candelabras from the original set to use in the new Medieval Zone. Talk about excellent attention to detail! Richard Ayoade is funny and works well as host. The Aztec Zone looks so much like the original one as well. The old plans were dug out of James Dillion's loft.

The fact that the maze is back in a Social Media age is also fantastic. TCM was born many years ago, only because Fort Boyard wasn't available for UK filming. Since then we have seen it morph into various exciting forms. We can even enjoy it again and again on YouTube, on 4oD.... or even at a live experience. These are truly exciting times to be a Crystal Maze Fan. It is back for a Series 2, and who knows it will continue to evolve again. It is a show that doesn't get old, it was way ahead of its time and still is. Long live TCM.

The Original Series

Interview with Anita Stubbs, Crystal Maze Production Secretary, 30/01/2018

Anita, how did you find
David G Croft, the Original Producer of The Crystal Maze to work with?

Anita: "I worked on a couple of things with him, he used to shout “rock and roll” in the gallery. He was really funny to work with."

What was it like to work on the set of The Crystal Maze?

Anita: "I have very happy memories of working on that show, although it was so very cold on the airfield where it was shot, right in the middle of Winter."

What kept all the Crew happy despite the set being in a Freezing Aircraft Hangar?

Anita: "There was a double decker bus where we had the catering and I ate so much I couldn’t fit into my jeans for the wrap party.  Fry ups every morning, mid morning doughnuts, big lunch and dinner with puddings!".

Anita was kind enough to sell her Crystal from the show to me on eBay. I paid £450 for it!

 Let the Four Winds Blow

My name is Neil Robinson, I am 29 and I would describe myself as a Crystal Maze "Superfan". I am also one of the admin's for this group. My fascination, enjoyment and obsession of this programme is through the roof. I've always enjoyed the programme, it is good innocent family fun - TCM involves your brain - you get to shout at the screen, laugh at the misfortune of contestants, feel suspense at the prospect of the contestant getting an automatic lock-in, get absorbed into the fantasy of the incredible zone sets, and enjoy the individual characters of every presenter. Every Crystal Maze Presenter, Past and Present have their own enjoyable traits. Richard O'Brien, witty and comical, Edward Tudor-Pole, dark and imaginative, Richard Ayoade - highly satirical.

I have long campaigned for this programme to be brought back, and I was delighted when it finally returned in 2017. I was even more excited when an old school friend of mine, Robert Griffin, became a contestant with his twin brother on the new series. He was in my Maths Class at School. He is now the infamous legendary Crystal Maze Presenter who got stuck on a Spinning Planet in the Futuristic Zone. I would never of thought this. I replayed it so many times and laughed my head off when they showed it on "GOGGLEBOX".  I am now hoping to also get a place on the programme. I am ready, I even have the jacket for it! I have also done the Live Experiences in London and Manchester several times, and they are awesome.

I'd say I know an awful lot of trivia about TCM, from its conception, to its design, to its legacy and it's revival. I have emailed Producers and Crew past and present and have been able to understand how the show was put together, and brought back. It has always amazed me how intricate and detailed the sets are, and how big they are. This is and was a TV show on a huge scale. The original TCM Producer, David G Croft sold me an original contestant jacket from Series 6 of The Crystal Maze. The new Producer, Neale Simpson, has also kept in regular contact with this group and provided us with fascinating insights into how they brought the maze back. He has listened to our feedback and has even responded to us. He is aware of this blog and has given it his support, he's also supplied some graphics and images for us to use, and that we are very grateful for. We respect and admire your work.

Honest constructive feedback so far about the new series, really like the new games and the maze's new image, but for Series 2 a few minor tweaks are needed. I was slightly confused at first when there were no zone transitions in order of the map. This is due to the constraints of the layout of the set. They no longer have a giant aircraft hangar to house the set as per the layout of the maze. The Zones are no longer interconnected. For me, the best part was when they travelled a lengthy journey around from zone to zone, after all it is a time travelling adventure show. Secondly, I wish they would ban celebrities, as they undermine the Integrity of what The Crystal Maze is. Let's not forget, originally you had to pass a MENSA test to get on the show! I feel that the new maze is missing The Aztec River, and Moat/drawbridge around the dome. These added a bit of drama to the beginning and end of the show. For a show that has been constantly repeated on Challenge for twenty years, I think people are easily going to pick up what is missing.

Richard Ayoade is a great host and is funny, I just wish he would absorb us into the fantasy of the zones, rather than taking the mickey out of the set. Richard O'Brien and Edward Tudor-Pole, for me, did a good job of placing us into the worlds they were travelling through. Maybe we will see some tweaks for Series 2. They now also play backing suspense music within the games, this took a bit of getting used to but now I like it and I think that it works. Regarding the theme, The Original Forcefield tune will always be the best, in my opinion. I don't think it is used for the revival as I think they want to keep the original separate as its own entity, and that is perfectly understandable. If I was in charge, I would also change the map graphic to a more classic look.

The new games, however are superb and are exactly how I envisaged a Crystal Maze comeback to be, which is why I want to go on Series 2. They are modern, yet in keeping with the spirit of the original series. That is just genius. The Zones look vivid and almost an exact replica of the original. (Except for Futuristic obviously). The Producer, Neale Simpson also lives and breathes TCM like us all here, so that's a bonus as well. It is amazing to see TCM back in the Social Media and digital era. Instant comments and tweets about contestants epic fails. I do believe the Maze will continue to evolve, just like the original and be even bigger and better over time. It has stood the test of time. We are here in 2018 still talking about an iconic TV show which started in 1990.

To this date I have a massive collection of props and items from The Crystal Maze, past and present. These include: Original Crystal from the 90s Crystal Maze, sold to me by Anita Stubbs, TCM Production Secretary; Original green Contestant Jacket from Series 6, sold to me by David G Croft, New Crystal from the new series, SU2C shirt, Crew T Shirt, Signed photo from David G Croft, Futuristic Timer Clock from the Futuristic Zone, (it still works) - I sourced this from a Prop Company. My collection is getting bigger and bigger! My ultimate dream now would be to appear on the new series of The Crystal Maze. I submitted a team this week, so fingers crossed. I met Edward Tudor-Pole in 2016, and would love to meet Richard O'Brien and Richard Ayoade.
